In the former church of the Purgatorio in Montemarano, a collection of Italian liturgical textiles from the 16th to the 20th century.
On Piazza Mercato in Montemarano, the former church of the Purgatorio and the adjoining church of the Sacro Cuore house the Museum of Sacred Vestments, set up between 1983 and 1997. It holds a collection of Italian liturgical textiles, mostly from southern Italy, made between the 16th and 20th centuries and valuable for the study of textile history.We also like the building itself: the church of the Purgatorio grew out of the enlargement of a family chapel, was donated in 1707 to Bishop Celestino Labonia and restored in 1776, as the inscription on the doorway records. We suggest looking at the 18th-century frescoed lunettes and the funerary symbols on the doorway, linked to its old role as a burial place.
