The village of Castelvetere sul Calore, grown around an old Lombard castle: its very name means "old castle".

The name Castelvetere combines castrum and vetus: the old castle around which the village houses grew. The fortress was built by the Lombards and, after various transformations, the site is now linked to the mother church of the Assunta, with its 18th-century bell tower. The place is recorded as early as 991, when it was donated to the monastery of San Benedetto in Salerno. In 1167 it passed to the Sanctuary of Montevergine and, after several changes of hands, in 1684 it was sold to Giuseppe de Beaumont, who became the village's baron. We suggest losing yourself in the historic centre, between the Ripa and the oratory of the Madonna del Monte Carmelo: we love the feeling of walking inside a village that literally grew up around its walls.
