The mother church of Cassano Irpino, dedicated to the patron Saint Bartholomew, built in 1557 and enlarged in the 18th century.
On the main square of Cassano Irpino stands the church of San Bartolomeo Apostolo, the mother church dedicated to the patron saint. An inscription dates its construction to 1557 and bears the monogram of the donor, Garcia II Cavaniglia; it may have been built to dispel fear after a plague. In 1762 an enlargement added a monumental doorway and a marble bust of the saint.Of the original building, the Gothic arches on pillars and six lancet windows remain; the bell tower rests on medieval arches. Badly hit by the 1980 earthquake, the church needed seventeen years of restoration, during which 16th-century frescoes came to light. We suggest looking at the high altar of 1747 and the Baroque-Rococo ensemble donated by the Jesuits in 1763.
