The former cathedral of Montemarano, among the oldest Norman religious monuments in the area, with a crypt and 12th-century frescoes.

On Piazza del Popolo, in Montemarano's historic centre, stands the church of Santa Maria Assunta, the mother church and former cathedral. The diocese is first mentioned in a bull of 1058, and the original core is among the oldest Norman religious monuments in the area. After the diocese was suppressed in 1818 it became a collegiate church in 1844; the dome of 1888 gave the Romanesque interior a sober Baroque look. The façade has a 16th-century doorway and a bell tower on a massive pyramidal base. Inside we love the carved capitals of the Romanesque columns dividing the naves. We suggest going down into the crypt, restored in 1984, with the relics under the altar and 12th-century frescoes of Saint Nicholas and Saint John of Montemarano. Also remarkable are a 15th-century reliquary cabinet and the bronzes by Tarcisio Musto.
