1950 church in the Santa Croce hamlet of Ceppaloni, heir to an ancient Marian sanctuary, with a rare 18th-century statue of the Assumption.

In the Santa Croce hamlet of Ceppaloni stands the Church of Maria Santissima Assunta, heir to an ancient Marian sanctuary recorded since at least the 15th century along the road to Altavilla Irpina, and still a pilgrimage destination in the 18th century. Repeatedly hit by landslides, the old church finally collapsed in 1916.The present building was built in 1950 on a new site, partly reusing materials from the lost church. We are moved by the 18th-century statue of the Madonna of the Assumption, which survived the collapse, holding the Child in her arms: an unusual iconography for this subject. We recommend a stop to discover a story of devotion and tenacity of the local community.
