A small 19th-century rural chapel in Petruro Irpino, destination each year of the procession with the old painting of the Madonna of Montevergine.

In the countryside of Petruro Irpino, a village perched on a spur above the Sabato valley, stands a small rural chapel dedicated to the Madonna of Montevergine, built in the 19th century. We like its simplicity: a few essential forms set in the hilly landscape on the border with the Sannio, testifying to the deep bond between these communities and the Marian sanctuary of Monte Partenio. The chapel comes alive above all once a year, when Mass is celebrated at the end of the procession with the 17th-century painting of the Madonna of Montevergine, usually kept in the village's mother church. We suggest combining the visit with a stroll through the small centre, between the A Pila fountain and the war memorial.
