Monastery of the Virginians in Altavilla Irpina

The story of the monks of Montevergine in Altavilla begins at the end of the 15th century, with a grange that managed the abbey's lands. Suppressed in 1567, it seemed destined to disappear, but the townspeople would not accept it: so the community obtained permission to build a new house, authorised in 1577 by the Archbishop of Benevento, just outside the walls.We like seeing how the building keeps its original four-sided plan, with a portico and cloister. We recommend pausing at the entrance: on the stone portal stands an old emblem with the letters MV, a sign that it belonged to the Montevergine religious community.
