Norman castle on a rocky spur above the Sabato valley in Ceppaloni, with its surviving round tower.

On a rocky spur overlooking the Sabato valley, Ceppaloni Castle controlled the ancient road between Benevento and Salerno. The Norman building dates back to the second half of the 11th century and its history is eventful: Pope Honorius II stayed here in 1128, it was destroyed and rebuilt by Roger II, set on fire in 1229, and in 1437 it hosted Alfonso V of Aragon.Having passed through several feudal families, it was turned into a ducal residence and then abandoned after the 1688 earthquake. We like its triangular plan with rounded corners, which follows the shape of the cliff around an inner courtyard. Of the Norman layout a round tower survives. Today it is owned by the municipality and is undergoing restoration.
