Sant'Angelo in Munculanis in Sant'Agata de' Goti

  • Visit: about 20 min

Three-aisled Romanesque church in Sant'Agata de' Goti, with a portico on reused columns and medieval crypts.

Overlooking Piazza Ludovico Viscardi, the Church of Sant'Angelo de' Munculanis is one of the Romanesque gems of Sant'Agata de' Goti. It has a basilica plan with a nave and two aisles and an apse that was originally larger, then reduced and narrowed over the centuries. We like the main entrance, facing south and preceded by a portico supported by two massive reused columns, above which the bell tower soars.Restoration revealed the building's medieval structure, including a crypt beneath the aisles with draining-type burials; a second crypt, beneath the presbytery, was filled in at a later date. We recommend visiting it during a stroll through the old town, perhaps at sunset, when the tuff of the houses and churches glows with warm colours.
