13th-century church outside the south gate of Sant'Agata de' Goti, with 14th-century frescoes and a large 15th-century Last Judgement.
Just outside the southern gate of the old Norman walls of Sant'Agata de' Goti, the Church of the Annunziata was completed in 1238 together with the hospital founded in the same century. It has a basilica plan with a timber-truss roof and original single-light windows, while the Baroque façade retains a late 16th-century portal, linked to the restoration of 1591. We like the contrast between the sober exterior and the richness found within.The works that followed the 1980 earthquake brought to light the monument's various phases: in the apse a 14th-century fresco cycle can be admired, while the inner façade is covered by a monumental 15th-century Last Judgement by an unknown artist. We recommend lingering over the Annunciation altarpiece by Angiolillo Arcuccio, painted around 1465–1470 and still in its original frame.
