Ducal Castle of Sant'Agata de' Goti

  • Visit: about 1 h 15 min

The castle of Sant'Agata de' Goti, from early medieval origins to the Norman Drengots, with towers, a 15th-century courtyard and frescoed rooms.

The roots of the ducal castle of Sant'Agata de' Goti go back to the early Middle Ages, when a first fortification arose near ancient Saticula. In the Lombard period it became the seat of a county and after the year 1000 the Norman Drengots transformed the tower into a tuff castle with buttresses and towers. We like to think that Queen Joanna I of Naples also stayed here.In the 16th century a round tower used as a prison was added and in 1696 the castle passed to the Carafa of Maddaloni, before changing hands several times in the 19th century. Today it retains its square Norman towers and an inner courtyard with 15th-century geometric decoration. On the first floor, we recommend noticing the grotesques and the scene of Diana and Actaeon painted by Tommaso Giaquinto in the early 18th century.
