The sanctuary in Mugnano del Cardinale that since 1805 has kept the relics of Saint Philomena, a destination of international devotion.

The Sanctuary of Saint Philomena is the mother church of Mugnano del Cardinale and one of the sanctuaries of the diocese of Nola. Built between 1580 and 1600 and originally dedicated to Santa Maria delle Grazie, it owes its fame to the priest Francesco De Lucia, who had the saint's relics moved here in 1805. Since 10 August 1805 Philomena's body has been kept here. The remains of the young martyr were found in 1802 in the Catacombs of Priscilla, together with a phial of her blood. The healing of Pauline Jaricot in 1835 led Pope Gregory XVI to approve her public cult in 1837. We are moved to think of the many illustrious visitors who came here, including Pope Pius IX and Bartolo Longo.
