Church of Sant'Elia Profeta in Sperone

The 19th-century church of Sperone's patron saint, incorporating an old frescoed chapel dedicated to Saint Elijah.
The church of Sant'Elia Profeta is Sperone's main place of worship. The present building was constructed towards the end of the 19th century, incorporating the old chapel dedicated to the patron saint, reached from the right-hand side and richly frescoed. The simple façade is marked by pilasters and two small bell towers. The 1980 earthquake seriously damaged it.The interior has a single nave, with the high altar and a painted ceiling. We like knowing that the saint's cult is linked to the plague of 1656. We suggest coming on 20 July, for the patronal feast with the procession of barefoot Battenti, or in February for the Festa del Majo, which ends right on the square of Sant'Elia.
