The Roman amphitheatre of Abella in opus reticulatum, built into the ancient walls: Avella's best-known monument.

The Roman amphitheatre is the most famous monument of ancient Abella. Built in tuff using the opus reticulatum technique, it probably dates from the decades after the founding of Sulla's colony. One feature makes it unique: it incorporates a well-preserved stretch of the even older town walls. We suggest completing the visit with the Antiquarium and the monumental necropolis, which together with the amphitheatre form a true itinerary through Roman Avella. We love strolling among the arches, imagining the shows of the past. Excavations nearby have also revealed the remains of houses and gardens, a sign of a lively, well-organised town.
