The most important Roman monument of ancient Abella: a tuff amphitheatre similar in size to the one in Pompeii.

In the south-eastern part of ancient Abella survives the Roman amphitheatre, the heart of the town's archaeological park. It was built in tuff using the opus reticulatum technique, probably shortly after the founding of the Roman colony, over an area previously occupied by Samnite-era houses. In size it closely resembles the amphitheatre of Pompeii, and for us it is one of the most evocative visits in western Irpinia. The building rests against the town walls and partly on the natural slope, so much so that the arena lies lower than the surrounding ground. We suggest looking at the two main entrances on the major axis, the podium that separated the spectators from the arena and the tuff seats of the lower tier. A curiosity: in late antiquity work began to convert it into stables, left unfinished with the fall of the Empire.
