Polla's most important monument, from 1541, with a ceiling of 40 17th-century canvases, a 1636 crucifix and a carved wooden choir.

On the hill overlooking the valley, the Sanctuary of Sant'Antonio with its adjoining Franciscan convent is Polla's most important monument, built in 1541 outside the walls. As we enter, the ceiling takes our breath away, decorated with a gallery of 40 17th-century canvases by Michele Ragolia, all restored and devoted to the Immaculate Conception. We recommend pausing at the wooden crucifix of 1636 by Friar Umile da Petralia, for years a pilgrimage destination every Friday, and at the carved choir behind the high altar, with 21 stalls and 29 relief busts of Franciscan saints and a large hexagonal lectern in the centre. On the walls there are frescoes with scenes from the life of Moses.
