Church of Santa Maria Maggiore in Sant'Arsenio

  • Visit: about 20 min
  • 443 m

Church of Santa Maria Maggiore, among the main places of worship of Sant'Arsenio, a Vallo di Diano village documented from 1136.

Sant'Arsenio is a village in the Vallo di Diano which, according to tradition, was founded by refugees from Teggiano fleeing Saracen raids and by Basilian monks; the name recalls St Arsenius the Great. The first certain document is from 1136, when the territory was donated to the Badia di Cava. Among its places of worship the Church of Santa Maria Maggiore stands out.We like visiting it while strolling unhurriedly through the historic centre, to grasp the bond between the community and its churches. We suggest combining the stop with a tour of the nearby villages of the Vallo, such as San Pietro al Tanagro and San Rufo, with which Sant'Arsenio shares history and landscape.
