1st-century AD Roman funerary monument, built by the priestess Insteia Polla for her husband, with a moving inscription.

The Mausoleum of Gaius Uttianus Rufus is a funerary monument from the 1st century AD, commissioned by Insteia Polla, priestess of Livia Augusta, for her husband, a magistrate of ancient Volcei, today's Buccino. It was built of concrete faced with local stone, with a quadrangular base topped by a cylindrical body.In the middle of the cylinder seven blocks made up the dedicatory inscription, which recalls how he took her into his home at the age of seven and then had her as his wife for 55 years. We are moved by this story from almost two thousand years ago. The monument has recently undergone restoration work: we recommend a stop.
