At the top of Morcone's hill, the remains of the medieval stronghold rest on Samnite polygonal walls.

Morcone Castle occupies the top of the hill up which the village climbs, in a position overlooking the whole valley. Probably built in the 10th century, it is documented with certainty from 1122, when Jordan, Count of Ariano, took refuge here after being defeated by William the Norman. Today mainly stretches of the perimeter wall survive. What strikes us most is the base of the walls, built in the polygonal masonry typical of Samnite fortifications: the medieval stronghold reused a much older enclosure. The entrance portal with its pointed arch still survives. We recommend walking up through the alleys of the old town and stopping to take in the view over the upper Tammaro.
