Church · Morcone (BN)

Former Church of the Santissimo Salvatore

  • Visit: about 20 min
  • 656 m

Next to Morcone Castle, the old Church of the Salvatore stands on the remains of a Hellenistic temple and was a bishop's seat in the 11th century.

In the little square next to the castle stands the old Church of the Salvatore, one of the places most steeped in history in Morcone. Beneath the present floor, squared blocks have come to light revealing the presence of a Hellenistic temple, on which the Christian building was constructed. Its moment of greatest splendour dates from the 11th century, when for about a century it was a bishop's seat.Inside, faded traces of frescoes, a 17th-century baptismal font and a sarcophagus dated 1316 survive. Recent restoration has noticeably altered the building's appearance, but we love the idea of being in a place where almost two thousand years of history overlap. We recommend combining it with the climb to the castle.
