Pontelandolfo's tower, over 20 metres high, is the only remnant of the medieval castle destroyed by the 1688 earthquake.
In the centre of Pontelandolfo soars the medieval tower, the only surviving part of the castle. It was built by the feudal lords no earlier than the mid-14th century, after the passage of the armies of Charles of Anjou and Louis of Hungary, to guard a strategic site already fortified in the 12th century.Its dimensions impress us: it is over 20 metres high, has a diameter of 14 metres and walls about 4.5 metres thick at the base. The rest of the castle collapsed in the 1688 earthquake, while the tower held firm. It is privately owned: we recommend admiring it from the square, where it remains the symbol of the village.
