A 3rd-century BC Italic sanctuary at Macchia Porcara, perhaps dedicated to the goddess Mefitis, beside the drove road.

On the western edge of Casalbore, at Macchia Porcara, lies one of the most fascinating sites of ancient Irpinia: an Italic temple of the 3rd century BC, built near a spring along the route of the Pescasseroli-Candela drove road. The votive deposits suggest a sanctuary dedicated to the goddess Mefitis, worshipped by the Samnites. We love the details revealed by the excavations: the almost square cella, traces of six wooden columns, the staircase with fountains fed by one of the oldest lead pipelines in Campania, and the cocciopesto floor. The sanctuary was destroyed during the Hannibalic War. We suggest checking visiting arrangements in advance.
