A height above Buonalbergo with the remains of the early medieval fortified village of Montegiove, overlooking the Miscano valley.

North of Buonalbergo, at 806 metres above sea level, Monte Chiodo dominates the Miscano valley, and at its foot runs the Pescasseroli-Candela drove road (tratturo). A pre-Roman settlement once stood here, later replaced by an early medieval fortified village called Montegiove, probably founded in the 6th century and destroyed in 1122 by the troops of William II of Apulia.Excavations in 1999 and 2000 brought to light the remains of the stronghold, the village church and the city walls, as well as a pre-Roman ramp that perhaps led to a temple of Jupiter. Today the area is partly covered by conifers planted in the 1980s. We like to combine the walk with the old tavern along the drove road, restored in the early 2000s.
