Cave of San Michele in Casalbore

  • Visit: about 20 min
  • 603 m

A cave devoted to Saint Michael since Lombard times, along ancient drove roads, with an adjoining chapel and two pilgrimages a year.

A short distance from the centre of Casalbore opens the cave of San Michele, a place of worship since the Lombard era. This is no coincidence: it stood along busy routes, the Pescasseroli-Candela drove road and the Via Traiana, a Roman road still travelled by pilgrims and wayfarers throughout the Middle Ages.Next to the cave we find a chapel dedicated to the Archangel. We suggest visiting during the two annual pilgrimages, on 8 May and 29 September, when popular devotion fills the place. We like to think of it as an ideal stop on the ancient Michaelic routes linking the south to the Gargano.
