Sanctuary of the Madonna della Macchia

  • Visit: about 20 min
  • 416 m

Hilltop sanctuary south of Buonalbergo, home to a 12th-century Byzantine wooden statue of the Virgin.

On a hill south of Buonalbergo, the Sanctuary of the Madonna della Macchia has ancient roots: a donation of 1078 to the monastery of Santa Sofia in Benevento already records its existence. Tradition tells of a statue brought by the crusaders of Bohemond of Hauteville and hidden among the trees, found in the 16th century by a mute shepherd girl who regained her voice. The present building, from 1650–1660, is a single hall with a barrel vault, flanked by a courtyard, a bell tower and an ancient hermitage. We love the 12th-century Byzantine wooden statue, with the Virgin seated and the blessing Child holding a scroll. In 2023 the church was proclaimed a diocesan sanctuary; we recommend coming for the feast on 12 September.
