Castle · Casalbore (AV)

Casalbore's Norman tower, with a plaque of 1216, home since 2013 to the Castles Museum devoted to Irpinia's fortifications.
The tower of Casalbore dates from the Norman period: above the entrance a travertine plaque with a Latin inscription bears the date 1216. The castle had Gothic forms, with pointed arches and mullioned windows, and was transformed in the 16th century by the Caracciolo family, who had bought the fief in 1485. The main tower and a smaller one at the south-east corner survive; a third was demolished after the 1962 earthquake. We like that the interior can be visited, with a large masonry fireplace on the first level. Since 2013 the tower has housed the Castles Museum, an educational route on the fortifications of the province of Avellino with a workshop devoted to the Middle Ages. We especially recommend the visit with young people: it is an excellent way to discover Irpinia's castles.
