Medieval village grown around a Norman tower on a limestone headland, redesigned in the 18th century after the 1688 earthquake.

The historic centre of Ginestra arose in the Middle Ages around a Norman tower on a limestone headland, when the population left the valley, inhabited since Roman times, for safety. The name already appears in the Catalogue of Barons around 1100, while the addition "degli Schiavoni" probably recalls a colony of refugees who arrived in the 16th century. After the 1688 earthquake the town was redesigned, and in the 18th century the streets were made to converge on the palace and the churches. Of the tower, incorporated into a palace demolished after the 1962 earthquake, part of the north side remains: we like looking for it on the edge of the village, towards the countryside.
