Ruins of a medieval fortified village on an isolated crag in the territory of San Giorgio La Molara.

In the territory of San Giorgio La Molara, on top of an isolated rock called «Castello», remain the traces of Pietramaggiore, an ancient fortified site documented since Norman times. In the 12th century it was the scene of clashes between Count Rainulf of Alife and King Roger II, and in the following centuries it hosted Angevin and Aragonese soldiers. The 1456 earthquake reduced it to a small hamlet, and by 1549 it was already uninhabited. Today only a few ruins of the castle remain, while in the surrounding fields traces of Roman centuriation can still be seen. We like climbing up here for the charm of the place and the silence of the Sannio countryside. We recommend comfortable shoes and a little imagination to relive centuries of history.
