Art Nouveau theatre in Aversa dedicated to Domenico Cimarosa, with a horseshoe plan and a dome frescoed in the 1920s.

Aversa chose to dedicate its theatre to the composer Domenico Cimarosa, who was born here. Begun in 1889 as a wooden structure in another square of the town, the theatre was rebuilt in 1924 in tuff and reinforced concrete on its present site, in Vicolo del Teatro, taking on the Art Nouveau (Liberty) style forms that still make it recognisable today. The auditorium has a horseshoe plan and is topped by a circular dome frescoed in the 1920s by Arnaldo De Lisio with allegories in honour of Cimarosa and Niccolò Jommelli. On the façade we notice the upper Moorish-arch windows and a bas-relief with coats of arms and musical symbols. We recommend looking for a show or concert on the programme to enjoy the interior.
