Teverola's parish church, dedicated to St John the Evangelist and documented from 1324, holds a terracotta Madonna from around 1400.
The mother church of Teverola, in the diocese of Aversa, the Church of San Giovanni Evangelista is already mentioned in 1324 in the ecclesiastical tithe registers. The building has a single nave, with a great arch leading into the apse; the old barrel-vaulted sacristy, frescoed in 1874, is considered the oldest part.We like discovering the works it holds: a terracotta Madonna delle Grazie from around 1400, from a vanished monastery, an 18th-century wooden statue of the titular saint and the canvas of the Apotheosis of St John the Evangelist by Giuseppe Simonelli, a pupil of Luca Giordano. We suggest a careful stop here as you pass through the town.
