Complex founded in 1269 as Charles of Anjou's leper hospital in Aversa, with a Renaissance cloister and sarcophagi by Giovanni da Nola.

Outside Porta San Nicola, in Aversa, the Church and Friary of the Maddalena have an unusual history: in 1269 Charles I of Anjou founded them as a leper hospital, then from 1420 the Conventual Friars Minor settled here, staying until 1813, when the complex became an asylum. Nothing remains of the Angevin phase, but the Renaissance cloister and the presbytery with a tall Brunelleschi-style dome survive. In the single-nave church we recommend looking for the two marble sarcophagi: that of Paolo Lamberto, carved in 1555 by Giovanni da Nola, and that of Angelo Orabona, from 1575. We also like the early 14th-century wooden crucifix, the Adoration of the Magi by Pietro Negroni and the Magdalene by Carlo Mercurio. In the cloister, commissioned by Jacopo Scaglione, a marble well bears the Orabona coat of arms.
