Church of Santa Maria Assunta in Cielo in Lusciano

  • Visit: about 20 min

Mother church of Lusciano of 14th-century origin, with a nave, two aisles and three apses, and a tall five-stage bell tower.

On Piazza San Giovanni Paolo II, the Church of Santa Maria Assunta in Cielo is the mother church of Lusciano. Its origins date back to the 14th century and the Romanesque nave is its oldest part; the side aisles retain 14th-century pointed cross vaults. The two-order façade is marked by pairs of Ionic columns, while the interior has a basilica plan with a nave, two aisles and three semicircular apses. We like looking up at the very tall bell tower, with five stages, the last of which is octagonal and crowned by a small pear-shaped dome. Inside, the walls were frescoed by Luigi Torelli in 1942. On the high altar is the statue of the Madonna Assunta with winged putti, while a chapel holds the statue and relic of the patron St Lucian of Antioch. We recommend a stop during the patronal feast.
