The diocesan museum of Sant'Agata de' Goti combines sacred art with places linked to St Alphonsus Maria de Liguori, bishop of the town.
Inaugurated in 1996 by the then Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger, the diocesan museum of Sant'Agata de' Goti gathers the artistic heritage of the diocese. We like its dual nature: the museum section is housed in the Church of the Madonna del Carmine, with an Early Christian slab, the tombstone of Abbot Antonio di Tramonto from 1361 and paintings such as a late Gothic Pietà and an Annunciation by Corrado Giaquinto.The second section is dedicated to the places of St Alphonsus Maria de Liguori, who was bishop of the town. It is in a wing of the bishop's palace in Piazza Umberto I, with a courtyard housing a lapidarium and the rooms where the saint lived. We recommend pausing at his episcopal chair, a detached fresco of 1614 and the documents of his beatification and canonisation processes.
