Church of Santa Croce e San Prisco

The archpriest church of Santa Croce e San Prisco is bound up with the very origins of the town and the tradition of the holy bishop of Capua. The building we see today is the result of an almost complete rebuilding begun in 1759 to a design by the Neapolitan engineer Pietro Lionti, who lengthened the central nave to give it more harmonious proportions; for a long time it was attributed to Luigi Vanvitelli.The works went on for years: around 1769 a new bell tower was built, detached from the church, and in 1770 the marble high altar was carved to a design by Lionti himself. The façade is of the Tuscan order and the interior combines Renaissance and Baroque forms. We suggest also seeking out the town's famous Early Christian chapel with its mosaics.
