19th-century theatre in Santa Maria Capua Vetere inspired by the Opéra Garnier, reopened in 2004 and home to an exhibition on theatre and cinema.

Nicknamed the little San Carlo, the Teatro Garibaldi in Santa Maria Capua Vetere was designed by Antonio Curri, inspired by the Opéra Garnier in Paris, and inaugurated in 1896 with Verdi's La forza del destino. It was the last opera house built in Campania. After difficult decades, between two wars and the closure that followed the 1980 earthquake, it came back to life in 2004 thanks to a long restoration. We like the façade with statues of Goldoni and Alfieri and medallions of Bellini, Rossini, Pergolesi and Cimarosa. Inside, the horseshoe auditorium has about 400 seats and a ceiling painted by Gaetano Esposito showing Torquato Tasso leaving the temple of the Muses. Since 2017 the theatre has also hosted a permanent exhibition on theatre and cinema: we suggest not missing the Hall of Mirrors.
