Church of Sant'Elpidio Vescovo

Overlooking Piazza Giovanni XXIII, the Church of Sant'Elpidio is the main church of Casapulla. According to tradition it was founded in the 5th century by Bishop Elpidius, who came from Africa, on the ruins of a temple dedicated to Apollo. Written sources already mention it in a papal bull of 1174 and in the 14th-century tithe registers, while its consecration took place in July 1467.Its present late Baroque appearance is due to an almost complete rebuilding between 1789 and 1791, funded by the local nobility and inspired by the taste of the Royal Palace of Caserta; the Tuscan-order façade dates from 1811. Inside, we recommend looking for the chapel of the Monte dei Morti and the painting of the Madonna delle lacrime (Madonna of Tears), linked to an event in 1955. A nativity scene is also set up at Christmas.
