The grandest cryptoporticus in Campania: three long vaulted wings beneath the former prison, with eighty windows and thirty niches.

Beneath the former prison between Corso Aldo Moro and Via Galatina, the structures of a huge cryptoporticus are partly preserved, considered the grandest of its kind in Campania. It was damaged in 1707, when the cavalry stables were built, and then in 1820 with the construction of the prison. It has three single-nave vaulted wings: the central one is over 96 metres long, the side ones almost 80, and they were originally 10 metres high. Eighty windows lit the corridor and thirty niches broke up the outer wall. In the early 20th century paintings could still be seen, including the Rape of Europa, now lost. We are impressed by its scale.
