Avellino's main theatre, opposite the castle, with an oval auditorium of 1,200 seats and some of the best acoustics in Italy.

In Avellino's historic centre, opposite the medieval castle, stands the Teatro Carlo Gesualdo, the city's main theatre. An earlier theatre named after the composer had been designed in the 19th century, but it was sold in 1925 and demolished. The present building, conceived after the 1980 earthquake by Carlo Aymonino and Gianmichele Aurigemma, was built between 1992 and 2001 and opened in 2002 with an opera by Mozart.Outside, the volume is rectangular, while the auditorium is oval, with twelve side boxes and five at the back, for a total of about 1,200 seats. The wooden stage is large and well equipped, and the acoustics are considered among the best of recent Italian theatres. We suggest pairing a show with a stroll around Piazza Castello.
