Avellino's castle of Lombard origin, linked to Roger II and the Caracciolo family, now an area given back to the city.

Avellino's castle has its roots in the age of the Lombards, who built its first section. It stands at the lowest point of the city, opposite the Gesualdo theatre. Here, on 27 September 1130, the antipope Anacletus II handed Roger II the bull that made him King of Sicily; in 1436 it was besieged by Alfonso of Aragon.Under the Caracciolo family it became a residence with a park and an artificial lake, but after the damage of Masaniello's revolt a long decline began. Today the remains of the old structures survive, and since 2023 Piazza Castello has been given back to the city after years of closure. We suggest strolling here and imagining the court that once lived in it.
