Church · Sessa Aurunca (CE)

The Romanesque cathedral of Sessa Aurunca, dedicated to Saints Peter and Paul, with a mosaic ambo, Cosmatesque floor and crypt.
Built in 1113 reusing Roman materials and consecrated in 1183, the Cathedral of Saints Peter and Paul is the religious heart of Sessa Aurunca and a national monument. The exterior has a 13th-century appearance, with a broad three-arched portico, while in the 18th century the interior was renovated in Baroque style at the wish of Bishop Francesco Caracciolo.Inside, eighteen Roman and medieval columns divide the three naves. We suggest pausing at the precious 13th-century ambo, with granite columns and mosaic panels, at the Easter candelabrum signed by the sculptor Pellegrino and at the Cosmatesque floor. We also like going down into the crypt, supported by twenty reused columns, and looking for the early canvas by Luca Giordano.
