Church of Santi Casto e Secondino

  • Visit: about 20 min
  • 233 m

In Sessa Aurunca, the sanctuary of Saints Castus and Secundinus, linked to the city's first martyr bishops, with the small medieval basilica and the catacomb.

Along Viale XXI Luglio, in Sessa Aurunca, stands the sanctuary dedicated to Saints Castus and Secundinus, bishops martyred between the late 3rd and early 4th centuries: tradition remembers Castus as the city's first bishop. This area is also home to the small basilica of San Casto, which the cultural heritage catalogue dates to between the late 12th and early 13th centuries. The site is linked to the catacomb of San Casto, where the remains of the two saints were kept in a Roman sarcophagus until around the 10th century. Of the martyrium, structures and fragments of medieval frescoes remain, restored and displayed in the Diocesan Museum. We suggest checking visiting arrangements in advance: we like discovering how the city's Christian roots lie here.
