Church of San Carlo in Sessa Aurunca

  • Visit: about 20 min

The small Baroque church of San Carlo on Via Roma in Sessa Aurunca, a key setting for the evocative Holy Week rites.

On Via Roma, in the centre of Sessa Aurunca, stands the small Church of San Carlo, dedicated to St Charles Borromeo. The building dates from the 17th century and displays Baroque forms; from the outset it has been linked to a confraternity founded in the early 17th century, which made it its seat.We like discovering it above all during Holy Week, one of the most heartfelt moments in the town's year: some of the penitential processions that wind through the streets set off from this church, including the one with the Deposition group. We suggest experiencing these days respectfully and slowly, letting yourself be drawn into the hushed atmosphere of the old Auruncan traditions.
