Ducal Castle of Sessa Aurunca

  • Visit: about 1 h 15 min

Castle on the ancient acropolis of Sessa Aurunca, from the Lombards to the Carafa, now home to the National Archaeological Museum and the library.

On the ancient acropolis of Sessa Aurunca rises the ducal castle, perhaps founded at the end of the 9th century by the Lombard gastald Landone. The Normans turned it into a fortress and residence, Frederick II enlarged it with new towers, and from the 15th century it became a court residence, belonging to the Marzano and then the Carafa families. It also hosted Charles V, whose stay is recalled in a painting in the town hall.We like the 13th-century mullioned windows and the irregular quadrangular plan. Municipal property from 1806, it was used as a prison and then as a school; after restoration between 2007 and 2014 it houses the municipal library and, since December 2024, the National Archaeological Museum of Sessa Aurunca. We suggest coming up here if only to enjoy the historic centre from above.
