Roman mausoleums from the late Republic and the 1st century AD along the ancient roads leading out of Abella.

Outside ancient Abella, along the roads leading out of the town and on the hills, stand funerary monuments built between the late Republican period and the 1st century AD, most likely for the families of the local elite and the great landowners. The most common form is a square base topped by an aedicule or by a circular or polygonal level ending in a point. We enjoy discovering how these tombs echo models found in Pozzuoli, Cumae, Capua and Pompeii, including the so-called "conocchia" (distaff) type. We suggest visiting them together with the amphitheatre and the Antiquarium: the monumental necropolis on Via Tombe Romane completes the story of ancient Avella.
