Early medieval church in Molinara, linked to Byzantine monks, with a rare Apulian-type domed hall.

Along the main street of the village of Molinara stands the Church of Santa Maria dei Greci, which tradition says was founded by Byzantine monks in the early Middle Ages; scholars date the first building to between the 10th and 11th centuries. As late as the 18th century baptisms here followed the Eastern rite, by immersion, until the Archbishop of Benevento imposed the Latin rite. What fascinates us is the original core, a domed hall on four arches, a type common in Apulia but extremely rare in Campania, with a barrel-vaulted presbytery. The bell tower on the right side retains lower stages perhaps from the 14th century. Badly damaged by the 1962 earthquake and then restored, the church today shows its bare masonry. We recommend visiting it to discover a rare example of medieval sacred architecture in the Sannio.
