The rural Church of Santa Barbara, on the hill of the same name in San Marco dei Cavoti, dates from the 16th century and was restored in the 2000s.
On the Toppo di Santa Barbara, a hill between the San Severo and Calisi districts, stands this 16th-century rural church, with a rectangular plan and a wooden roof. Nearby you can still see some remains of the old village of San Severo, destroyed by the 1349 earthquake. After a long period of neglect and several collapses, it was restored and reopened for worship in the 2000s. Of the painted ceiling only two panels survived, now on display at the Palazzo Jelardi Museum. We like the tradition of carrying the saint's statue from the village to the church on 1 May and bringing it back on 4 December, for the feast of St Barbara.
