A palace in Lauro with Vasari-style grotesque decoration, home to the museum devoted to Umberto Nobile.

Palazzo Pignatelli is one of the most interesting historic buildings in Lauro, a fief that passed to Scipione Pignatelli in 1541. Over the centuries it has been profoundly transformed, but it keeps its elegant grotesque decoration in the style of Vasari, its most admired feature. The palace houses the Umberto Nobile Museum, devoted to the polar explorer: equipment and clothing from the expeditions, drawings, designs, honours and the log of the airship Norge, with the note recording its arrival at the North Pole. We suggest checking the museum's accessibility in advance. We love that an Irpinian village holds such an important piece of the history of exploration.
