In Casertavecchia, the great surviving tower of the medieval castle, among the largest in Europe, once the last bastion of defence.

In the medieval village of Casertavecchia, among the remains of the castle, rises the great cylindrical tower that tradition links to falcons. It is considered one of the largest medieval towers in Europe and was the last refuge in the event of a siege. It is one of the few parts of the castle to have survived and still defines the skyline of the hilltop village today. It rises over three levels: only the first could be reached from outside, via a drawbridge connecting it to the castle, while the upper floors were reached by a spiral staircase built into the thickness of the wall. Provisions were stored at the bottom, and guards and lords lived higher up. We recommend combining it with a visit to the village and the cathedral.
