Crypt rediscovered after the 1980 earthquake, with 14th-century Giottesque frescoes and the lid of a Roman tomb.

The 1980 earthquake brought to light this crypt beneath Trevico Cathedral. Its treasure is a cycle of apse frescoes covering about eleven square metres, most likely attributed to Neapolitan pupils of Giotto, with the enthroned Crucifix at the centre.Around Christ we find St Peter, St Catherine of Alexandria, St Anthony the Abbot, St John the Baptist, the Madonna and Child and St William of Vercelli. The frescoes have been restored and mounted on special supports. We also recommend looking for the lid of a Roman tomb with a Latin inscription.
