Two Samnite necropolises in the upper Ufita valley, with about a hundred tombs and grave goods rich in bronzes, weapons and jewellery.

In the upper Ufita valley, in the heart of the Baronia, the Carife archaeological area preserves the traces of a Samnite community. Systematic research began after the 1980 earthquake and uncovered two necropolises, Addolorata and Piano la Sala, with about a hundred burials and two hundred sets of grave goods. Most of the tombs date from the 4th century BC, some from the 5th.We are struck by the variety of the grave goods, which varied according to sex and rank: bronze belts, weapons and razors for men; brooches, jewellery and an ivory disc for women. Some tombs held Etruscan bronzes, including candelabra and a krater attributed to the Dolon Painter, while toys were found in children's burials. The finds link the site to the Casalbore culture.
